Traveling

It’s almost impossible to summarize my travels in a page or two. When I am asked to name my favorite places I have visited, I usually (and truthfully) respond “I have never been to a place I wouldn’t go back to”. When asked what’s next on my bucket list, my typical answer is that my “list of places to visit gets longer every time I visit a new place”. Thus there’s no bucket list for me.

That said, I am happy to share some travel tips and tricks I have discovered over the years. I know these work for me. As they say, your mileage may vary.

  1. Whenever you have a chance to visit a new place, take it. It’s a short life, and a big wide world.

  2. When planning, just plan a few key anchor events/things to do/places to visit. Leave a lot of room for serendipity to do its magic. Some of the best discoveries and memories will come unplanned.

  3. Jet lag. While the biology of it is obvious and universally known, solutions are not. I do know that fretting about it doesn’t help. The worst thing you can do upon landing in Barcelona at 7 am is to start thinking about how bad your day is going to be since you didn’t catch a wink on your flight.

  4. There is no such thing as a ‘pure business trip’. At least try not to make one. I have always tried to add some personal exploration to most of my business trips.

  5. And then, there’s the other side. Most people (try to) build a ‘Chinese wall’ between work and vacation. I tried and gave up on it a long, long time ago. Instead, I have embraced the melding of ‘work’ and ‘life’ in general. With the technology available to us, it’s not hard to stay in touch and stay abreast of the goings-on at the office. Why allow 1200 emails to pile up when you can stay current? Well, at least that’s me. I have done client work from the shores of Antarctica to the jungles of Borneo.
